Simulation for Integrated DeltaV /PLC/ESD Systems

  • This technical note describes options for simulation of IO for integrated control systems that have DeltaV and PLCs or ESDs.


    DeltaV users who also have integrated PLCs or ESDs have several options for testing their automation system application software with MiMiC. Two of these options are described below.
    • Option One: DeltaV / PLC Integrated Simulation

    Include in your test system a DeltaV controller, interface module (serial card or VIM network gateway usually) and a PLC CPU. In this case, MiMiC would be able to simulate the IO of DeltaV, through the VIM, and the PLC IO, thorough the appropriate driver and physical connection. The PLC and ESD SIO drivers available for MiMiC are listed in the MiMiC product bulletin. MiMiC would provide IO and process simulation for both systems IO simultaneously.

    This option allows the user to test the application software in DeltaV and the PLC or ESD and to test the interface logic and configuration between the two systems.

    • Option Two: DeltaV Simulation with Simulated PLC Data

    The second option would be to use the DeltaV Virtual IO Module and the MiMiC DeltaV Railbus SIO Driver to simulate the signals from the PLC as seen at DeltaV. MiMiC would simulate the DeltaV IO including the serial card or VIM network gateway and simulate the responses and signals from the PLC.

    This option allows the user to test the application software in DeltaV including the responses from the PLC as seen be DeltaV, but does not support testing of the PLC application software or the interface between DeltaV and the PLC (or ESD).


    Which option is chosen for a project should be dictated by:

    • The complexity of the PLC configuration. The more complex the configuration of the PLC, the greater the need to test it.
    • The complexity of the DeltaV to PLC (or ESD) interface.
    • Risk of the process and operations. Automation systems controller mission-critical or dangerous processes would be served well be pursuing option one above.
