Sometimes we don't hear much about safety training and prevention until after we hear about an incident. Advancements in instrumentation and modernizing plants are ultimately the best ways to improve safety.

If we wait until the instruments and equipment fail, that can lead to a failure, disruption, or environmental catastrophe.
Industrial Innovation : American Innovation, MYNAH, & MiMiC

    Author: Jason Covington
Subject: American Innovation, MYNAH, & MiMiC
Posted: 15 Jul 2008 at 4:41pm

I just read an excellent editorial on this topic in Control Engineering Magazine by Mark Hoske titled "Innovate like Thomas Edison."

I appreciate the positive attitude and optimism that Hoske shows here. I responded to the editorial with a rant about my frustrations with the media, politics, and the dialog I hear every day on the topic of the energy crisis, the economy, and the skills gap crisis. The solutions are so obvious! Why do we have to make stumbling blocks for the great American innovators out there? We already have all the answers in solar and wind power, exploration, offshore drilling, building refineries, coal liquefaction, nuclear power, and other methods. Just let us implement them!

Here's what I said:

Industrial Innovation is going to be the key to overcomingthe energy crisis, the skills gap crisis, and any economic woes. Just crying"We can't! We can't!" any time we develop new innovations andtechnologies for developing new supply lines of oil, gas, and alternative energy is silly. The big whining we hear these days is"It will take too long, so it's not a 'viable' solution." We said this20 years ago with nuclear power and refineries, and 12 years ago with offshoredrilling.

This generation has to step up and not be a generation of whiners, but innovators and doers, like Edison. I know we can be successful in all theseendeavors as long as the government, politicians, special interests, andlawsuits don't stop us from progressing with real solutions.

P.S. Lowering thespeed limit to 55 is not a "real solution."

I am writing a blog series now on "IndustrialInnovation"

MYNAH, developers of MiMiC "green" technology forindustrial plants

http://www.mynah.com

Edited by Jason Covington - 15 Jul 2008 at 4:43pm

MYNAH Product Development : Summer 2008 MiMiC v3 development efforts

    Author: Jason Covington
Subject: Summer 2008 MiMiC v3 development efforts
Posted: 15 Jul 2008 at 3:16pm

A lot of time and effort is being put forth by MYNAH Developers to enhance the Operator Training Manager component of MiMiC v3. Already known for being unique in having an operator training module as part of the application, MiMiC v2 was already top notch and recognized as the industry leader in allowing the plant's simulation to be used past commissioning and testing, throughout the entire lifecycle of the plant, to train and retrain operators on various scenarios and upset conditions quickly and easily without any plant downtime.

This operator training manager is robust enough that plants can save millions by doing their own training internally. The software is easy to use. Martin Berutti and I just wrote an article for Chemical Processing Magazine on best practices in operator training that will appear later this year. In the meanwhile, I hope some of the MYNAH Developers will share more details on the features they are adding. It is very quiet over there, despite the noises coming from the construction of our new building addition down the lane.

Web Development, Internet Marketing : Choosing a Browser - Firefox vs Internet Explorer

I found that IE7 has alot of issues, bugs, and latency problems. You can read more on this topic inour forum on this topic:
Visit the Web Development / Internet Marketing Forum:

http://www.mynah.com/forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=18

There are hundreds of reason why Mozilla Firefox is better. In fact, developers and others in the know won’t even use IE6 or 7 for someobvious reasons. It won’t do the job well for web development and otherdevelopment. It surpasses IE in speed, functionality, and usability. It hasfeatures far above IE. I figured this out just recently. The other guys here acted surprisedI was using IE. When I switched, it was like a bright light switch going on withthe increased speed and usability.

Now, you can continue to use IE and still install the Alexa Toolbar:

http://www.alexa.com/site/download?show=ie

Use the tool that works best for what you do; I suspect ifyou try Mozilla for a few weeks, you will see why it is better. You can haveboth browsers installed and use them interchangeably. I do. You can just use MozillaFirefox and the Alexa toolbar on it to help us out now and then when you do infact browse our site and use our forum. If you install it as your main browser with MYNAH as yourhome page, this will help our site ranking a lot over time.

Microsoft CRM needs to be loaded on IE, by the way. Microsoft's CRM is junk though. That CRM application is as clunky as can be, but Microsoft must “preserve” its branding. Just use both browsers for different purposes. Iuse Mozilla 90% of the time now. It is faster by far.

I only use IE when I have too; I don't want to be slowed down and have to reboot my machine all the time.

Edited by Jason Covington - 15 Jul 2008 at 11:43am
