How to Replace VIM with VIM2 in a Redundant Pair
By Noelle Weymer
Product: DeltaV Virtual IO Module - VIM2

The purpose of this technical note is to demonstrate how to replace VIM with VIM2 in a redundant pair.

Background:

By design, a VIM and a VIM2 cannot be deployed together as a redundant pair. If one of the VIMs in a pair fails, the expected procedure is to replace it with a VIM2, perform a switchover manually, and then replace the second VIM with a VIM2, as well.

Solution:

Perform the following steps to ensure bumpless field communications. This procedure applies to both M and S Series VIMs:

1. Remove the failed VIM from the 2-wide.

2. Decommission the failed VIM side of the placeholder in VimNet Explorer. Ensure that you have the correct/latest VimNet configuration. If required, the configuration can be read back from the running VIM as documented here (http://www.mynah.com/content/steps-required-rebuild-vimnet-explorer-conf...).

3. Install a new decommissioned VIM2 into the 2-wide. Hook up to network. The network connection is made on the Secondary Ethernet port.

4. The new VIM2 will appear in the Decommissioned list in VimNet Explorer.

5. Commission the placeholder with the new VIM2 and upload it with the existing configuration. Configuration may be uploaded for VIM-A, VIM-B or both. Select only VIM-A or VIM-B, depending on which VIM is being replaced.

6. Note that the new VIM2 will be in Standby state. DeltaV Diagnostics will show no communications between cards. This is expected since there is no VIM interlink. Both old VIM and new VIM2 will independently communicate with the field.

7. Remove the Active partner old VIM from the 2-wide. This will cause a switch over to the new VIM2 we just installed. Alternatively, use DeltaV Diagnostics to force a switchover manually. Wait for the newly Active VIM2 to report its status in DeltaV Diagnostics.

8. Decommission the VIM side of the placeholder.

9. Install another VIM2 into the 2-wide and connect to network. The network connection is made on the Secondary Ethernet port.

10. The new VIM2 will show up in the VimNet Decommissioned list. Commission the placeholder with the new VIM2 and upload it with the existing configuration. Configuration may be uploaded for VIM-A, VIM-B or both. Select only VIM-A or VIM-B, depending on which VIM is being replaced.

11. Note that the new VIM2 will be in Standby state. DeltaV Diagnostics will show no communications between cards. This is expected since there is no VIM interlink.

12. Connect a crossover network cable between the two VIM2 cards. The VIM2 interlink uses the primary Ethernet.

13. DeltaV Diagnostics should clear. This is the normal state with both VIMs now replaced with VIM2s.
