This product bulletin discusses the services available from MYNAH to assist with the application of VIM2 hardware with MYNAH Industrial Ethernet Drivers for successful third party device integration into DeltaV.

Virtual IO Module 2 (VIM2) Application Overview

MYNAH Industrial Ethernet Drivers operating on DeltaV Virtual IO Modules 2 (VIM2) provide a native DeltaV IO interface to Industrial Ethernet networks and devices implementing the Modbus TCP/IP, EtherNet/IP, FMC722, or PROFINET protocol. With these protocols, DeltaV controllers can utilize high-speed Industrial Ethernet networks to communicate with plant floor devices such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs), motor control centers (MCCs), and weigh scales. There are only a few hardware and software components involved, but integration of existing devices on Industrial Ethernet networks into DeltaV can be complex, as it requires expertise across all aspects of the system. Taking the time to properly understand the entire system has been proven to be a valuable effort for both new system integration and expansion of existing systems. While often overlooked, the integration of PLCs, MCCs, and other third party IO devices can take significant time during any one of the six project phases described below. To reduce the time it takes to interface these devices into DeltaV, we have created services to simplify the integration of third party IO devices into DeltaV using the VIM2.

DeltaV Industrial Ethernet Integration Best Practices

To successfully integrate a third party IO device, these are the best practices one must take into account. The simplified integration goes through six phases which allow for agile execution by distributing focus and expertise. MYNAH - VIM2 Consulting Services

When utilizing MYNAH's VIM2 consulting services, all aspects of Industrial Ethernet integration are taken into consideration, and the right individuals are brought together to create a complete and documented solution. MYNAH's Application Engineering and Product Development teams provide consulting services to assist DeltaV users with the successful implementation of Industrial Ethernet integration projects. The best results are achieved by following a proven process-to-assist during the Design of the system. When properly completed, the Design can be used to create the full implementation of the system with minimal consulting engagements.

Definition Services

The MYNAH Application Engineer reviews the scope, constraints, assumptions, new methods, and uncertainties. The MYNAH Engineer takes stock of all of the project input data received early on, and proceeds to initiate the consulting efforts. During the consulting, the MYNAH Engineer can generate configuration and documentation based on the services identified below.

  • VIM2 Communications Definition
    • Third Party IO Device manual and desired update rate are necessary to define the messaging required for the specific application
    • MYNAH Engineer will work with the customer to research and discover the communications methods provided by the Third Party IO Device and provide information as to which MYNAH Industrial Ethernet Driver will work best with the device.
    • The results of the research will be summarized in a document and provided to the customer.
  • VIM2 Capacity Definition
    • All Third Party IO Device manuals, desired update rates / device / data point, and desired data mapping
    • MYNAH Engineer will work with the customer to research and discover the communications methods provided by all of the Third Party IO Devices and provide information as to which MYNAH Industrial Ethernet Driver will work best with all of the devices.
    • The results of the research will be summarized in a document and provided to the customer.
  • Industrial Ethernet Network Definition
    • All Third Party IO Device manuals and desired inter-connectivity between existing devices
    • MYNAH Engineer will work with the customer to research and discover the communications methods provided by all of the Third Party IO Devices and define network requirements.
    • The results of the research will be summarized in a document and provided to the customer.

Development Services

The MYNAH Engineer reviews the scope, constraints, assumptions, new methods, and uncertainties, and begins assembling the project team. When the project team mobilizes and the project kicks off, usually existing input data items can be made available quickly. The MYNAH technical lead takes stock of all of the project input data received early on, and works out the conceptual design architecture and key technical details. During the development effort the MYNAH Engineer will work towards set deliverables as indicated below.

  • VIM2 Communications Development
    • Completed VIM2 Communications Definition
    • All Third Party IO Device manuals, desired update rates / device / data point, and desired data mapping
    • MYNAH Engineer will work with the customer to determine how the Industrial Ethernet device will communicate with the VIM2. By providing field device requirements, MYNAH's Application Engineering and Product Development teams create a fully documented solution which can be used to integrate one or more of these devices into DeltaV. MYNAH Engineer will stage the hardware and assist with the definition of all available data for integration into DeltaV. Once a Data Links Review has been completed with the customer the MYNAH Engineer proceeds to the VIM Integration Testing. During the VIM Integration Testing the MYNAH Engineer will review network and device specific statistics and come up with the optimal design for communications with the Third-Party IO Device. A Third-Party IO device Factory Acceptance Test will be completed to assure that the integrated device meets the Data Link requirements.
    • The results of the development will be summarized in a document and provided to the customer. For more information on the deliverable of this effort refer to the DeltaV Integration with AB PowerFlex 755 Utilizing the Virtual IO Module. Test configuration can be provided upon request but it is not included by default.
  • Industrial Ethernet Network Development
    • Completed Industrial Ethernet Network Definition
    • All Third Party IO Device manuals and desired inter-connectivity between existing devices
    • MYNAH Engineer will work with the customer to research and discover the communications methods provided by all of the Third Party IO Devices and come up with a network layout. Once the layout has been approved by the customer during the customer review the build out of the network is completed. Final checkout of all components would be conducted on-site prior to startup.
    • The results of the development will be summarized in a design document, network installation, and checkout system verification.

Integration Services

The MYNAH Engineer reviews the scope, constraints, assumptions, new methods, and uncertainties. The MYNAH Engineer takes stock of all of the project input data received early on, and proceeds to initiate the consulting efforts. During the consulting MYNAH Engineer can generate configuration and documentation based on the services identified below.

  • Redundancy Testing / Documentation
    • All Third Party IO Device manuals, desired update rates / device / data point, and desired data mapping
    • MYNAH Engineer will work with the customer to research and discover the redundant communications methods provided by all of the Third Party IO Device and provide information as to which MYNAH Industrial Ethernet Driver will support the requested redundancy scheme.
    • The results of the research will be summarized in a document and provided to the customer along with configuration requirements to meet the desired redundancy scheme.
  • Full VIM2 Integration, Control System FAT
    • All Third Party IO Device manuals, desired update rates / device / data point, and desired data mapping
    • MYNAH Engineer will work with the customer to research and discover the communications methods provided by all of the Third Party IO Device and provide information as to which MYNAH Industrial Ethernet Driver will work best with all of the device.
    • The results of the research will be summarized in a document and provided to the customer along with on-site review of the communications statistics related to the VIM2.
  • System Implementation Integration
    • All Third Party IO Device manuals, desired update rates / device / data point, and desired data mapping
    • MYNAH Engineer will work with the customer to review and assist with existing integration of all of the Third Party IO Devices and provide information as to which Mynah Industrial Ethernet Driver will work best with all the devices.
    • The results of the research will be summarized in a document and provided to the customer along with configuration options for optimal communications with all of the devices.
