Mimic Dynamic Simulation for Gas Processing Plants

The Mimic dynamic simulation application package for gas processing plants provides a high performance solution for operator training and control system optimization.

The virtual gas plant package provides the complete environment for control system optimization and is an effective tool for teaching process and control engineers the control and operation of gas processing plants.

Mimic Dynamic Simulation allows operations managers of gas processing plants to:

This package uses Mimic Advanced Modeling Objects for dynamic, real-time, first principles modeling. The Mimic Advanced Modeling Objects are part of the Mimic Advanced Modeling Objects License that adds sophisticated modeling objects into the Mimic Simulation Studio modeling palette. These Objects can be used on Mimic systems for application software testing or operator training. The Mimic Advanced Modeling Objects License provides:

  • Medium-High to High Fidelity simulation performance
  • Rigorous first principles process modeling using proven dynamic, real-time modeling methods
  • Unit operation modeling objects
  • Easy handling of individual stream component physical properties using Mimic Component Sets
  • Block to block communications of all parameters with one connection using Mimic streams
  • Mimic OTM Process Snapshot support
  • Mimic OPC Server access to all model parameters

In Mimic Simulation Studio, process models using these objects can be integrated with any other models or Mimic dynamic modeling blocks. All modeling objects in Mimic are IEC1131 function blocks. Models can be built off-line and then viewed executing on-line with real-time values from the Mimic Simulation engine. The process of going from off-line model building to on-line model tuning is fast and intuitive.

Gas Plant Dynamic Simulation

Mimic dynamic simulation for gas plants provides accurate, real-time IO updates to the off-line control system. The simulation consists of a collection of real-time, dynamic first principles unit operations models configured to respond closely to the actual operations of the user's facility. The scope of the simulation can be set to meet the user's needs and the configuration of the gas processing facility. In general, a dynamic simulation for a gas plant will include:

  • Dynamic model of the Crude Gas Processing train with on-line changes of feed composition, temperature, and pressure
  • Dynamic model of the Acid Gas Removal (Amine Contactor) and Gas Dehydration train.
  • Dynamic model of the Light Gas Separation train including rigorous model of de-methanizer column.
  • Dynamic model of the Heavy Gas and Condensate Processing train including the condensate stabilizer and NGL columns.
  • Dynamic model of the Propane Chiller / Gas Refrigeration Train.
  • Dynamic model of the Gas Fractionation Train including rigorous models of the de-ethanizer, de-propanizer, and de-butanizer columns.
  • Dynamic model of the LNG Load Station and Storage System
  • Dynamic model of the Claus Sulfur recovery system (if needed).
  • Dynamic model of plant utility systems including hot-oil, hot-water, cool water, liquid nitrogen, and instrument air, with instructor controls for all utility pressure and temperature.

Crude Gas Processing Train

The crude gas processing train is rigorously modeled using Mimic's Advanced Modeling Separator Objects for the High Pressure Separator and Slug Catcher. Included in this model are the following capabilities:

  • Provide on-line modification of gas feed composition, temperature and pressure
  • Three-phase separation and transfer of light gas to downstream processing units
  • Feed gas changes will be dynamically reflected in this and all downstream process models

Acid Gas Removal (Amine Contactor) and Gas Dehydration Train

The Acid Gas Removal and Gas Dehydration Train are rigorously modeled using Mimic Advanced Modeling Column, Separator, Heat Exchanger, and Stream objects. Included in this model are the following capabilities:

  • Instructor controls for MDEA feed pressure, temperature, and composition.
  • Accurate, tunable mass transfer model for CO2 absorption through the Amine contactor
  • Customized pump curve and valve characteristics to match actual plant MDEA flow controls

Light Gas Separation Train

The Light Gas Separation Train is rigorously modeled using Mimic's Column, Compressor, Heat Exchanger and Stream Objects. Included in this model are the following capabilities:

  • Flexible gas membrane model that allows on-line simulation of membrane rupture, fouling, and tunable performance
  • Rigorous de-methanizer column model with tray-by-tray heat and energy balance

Heavy Gas and Condensate Processing Train

The Heavy Gas and Condensate Processing Train is modeled using Mimic Column, Separator, Compressor, and stream objects. Included in this model are the following capabilities:

  • Dynamic, interactive, real-time model of Condensate Stabilizer and NGL columns
  • Customized compressor curve for accurate flow and pressure modeling of condensate stabilizer overhead

Propane Chiller/Gas Refrigeration Train

The Propane Chiller/Gas Refrigeration Train is modeled using Mimic Evaporator / Surface Condenser, Compressor, Vessel, and Stream Advanced Modeling Objects. Included in this model are the following capabilities:

  • Customizable cold section with propane cooler and Joules-Thompson valve options
  • Easy setup and modification of gas chiller with Mimic Evaporator / Surface Condenser object

Gas Fractionation Train

For gas plants that have a full or partial gas fractionation train, Mimic Advanced Modeling Column Objects provide a rigorous, real-time model while providing powerful data analysis tools in Mimic Column View. Complete high fidelity models of de-ethanizers, de-propanizers, de-butanizers, and de-isobutanizers trains can be easily developed. Included in this model are the following capabilities:

  • Rigorous hydraulic, separation column models with tray-by-tray heat and energy balances
  • Instructor, engineer performance data of fractionation train in Mimic Column View.

LNG Load Station and Storage System

The LNG Load Station and Storage System is modeled to reflect the unique installed design of the plant using a combination of first principles, dynamic Mimic Advanced Modeling Objects and simplified, dynamic models using Mimic base modeling functions. This provides the ability to have rigorous models for critical operations while keeping the simulation development cost-effective and easy to maintain.

Instructor Station Environment

The Mimic Component Studio instructor station graphic allows full control of the dynamic gas plant simulation with a dynamic process flow diagram view of the individual gas plant trains and easy-to-use instructor controls. The following instructor controls are included:

  • Gas plant feed conditions including fuel quality and composition, feed water conditions, and other boundary condition controls
  • Individual pump and valve failure switches for ad-hoc instructor driven scenarios
  • Process snapshot controls for full steady-state, total reflux, and other key operating states
