ModbusTCP VIM v4.5.6 Release Notes
By Nobin William
Product: IOD-4111 - Modbus TCP IP Driver for DeltaV VIM2

Product Description

These release notes are for the ModbusTCP VIM firmware v4.5.6. The previous released firmware version is v4.5.5. The flash procedure is documented in the product manual. This version of the firmware is identical to the released firmware v4.5.5, with functionality enhancements and corrected defects as noted below.

Who Should Upgrade?

Recommended for all Modbus TCP applications.

What's New in this Release?

The following redundancy defects were corrected:

  1. Modified receive handling of 6-byte ModbusTCP message header in case field device does not send all 6 bytes at once. Previously, if the VIM did not receive all 6 bytes, it discarded all already received bytes and started a fresh receive. This caused a communication loss and inability to communication with the field device. This correction overcomes the field device limitation where the response message is sent in small fragments.
  2. Modified dataset error reporting so that an error is asserted only if both connections in a dual IP redundant system are down. An error is not asserted if one connection is down and the second is active.

The following enhancements were implemented:

  1. Modified connection method to not use an ICMP ping before connection attempt. Instead the connection attempt is started and a 15 second timeout is asserted. This new method optimizes connecting to field devices, particularly in redundant systems.
  2. Streamlined and optimized VIM/VIM communications for faster data exchange.
  3. Modified redundancy switchover status reporting to DeltaV. Furthermore, this change improves switchover time.
